Chinguetti is a beautiful city with extremely picturesque surroundings. The drive to the city is as gratifying as the time spent in the city itself. The narrow, winding mountain roads, surrounded by wilderness and exotic scenic beauty provide an unforgettable experience.
The main attraction in the city is the grand mosque, called The Friday Mosque of Chinguetti. It is an ancient structure of dry stone, featuring a square tower, crested with ostrich egg decorations. Other notable buildings here include the former French Foreign Legion Fortress and a tall watertower.
The city is also home to a series of unparalleled medieval libraries, containing manuscripts of scientific and Quranic texts, many of them dating as far back as the Middle Ages.
