Tourist Guide Oulata
Oulata is situated around 100 km from Nema, in south-east Mauritania, Africa. Located in the Sahara, the economy here is supported largely by trade and agriculture.
Oualata has a population of around 3,000 and is occupied primarily by the Berber and Soninke ethnic groups. It is characterised by a tropical climate, with extremely hot, dry summers and warm, pleasant, winters.
This caravan city was founded in the eleventh century, as a part of the Ghana Empire. An important centre in the trans-Saharan trade route, it was also a significant religious and cultural centre during the Middle Ages.
Declared as a World Heritage Site, the city’s architecture makes it distinctive. It is also renowned for its status as a centre for Islamic learning and the city is home to one of the most prestigious and exclusive schools Quranic schools.
