The main Hindu festivals include Diwali, the festival of light; Mahasankranti, the harvest festival; Thaipoosam Cavadee, in honour of Lord Subramanyam; Maha Shivaratri, in honour of Lord Shiva; and Holi, the festival of colour.

The month of Ramadan is followed with fasting and prayers by the Island’s Muslim population. It ends with Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
