Mauritius : Events and Entertainment

Festivities with a political theme include Independence Day on 12 March and Abolition of Slavery Day on 1 February. Mauritius celebrates its multicultural heritage all round the year. The main Hindu festivals include Diwali, the festival of light; Mahasankranti, the harvest festival; Thaipoosam Cavadee, in honour of Lord Subramanyam; Maha Shivaratri, in honour of Lord Shiva; and Holi, the festival of colour.

The month of Ramadan is followed with fasting and prayers by the Island’s Muslim population. It ends with Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.

Equally elaborate are the festivities during the Chinese New Year. The festivities include colourful parades, fireworks and dragon dances. During Christmas season, the island adopts a holiday mood.
