Before visiting Mauritius, it is advisable to get vaccinations against rabies, hepatitis A and typhoid. A yellow fever certificate is necessary for those travelling from an infected area. The risk of malaria is high; carry antibiotics and anti-malaria medication. All medicines should be carried in their original packing and with prescriptions. Avoid drinking tap water, opt for bottled water instead.
Incidents of people getting stung on the beach and in the waters do occur; if stung, seek immediate medical attention either at the nearest clinic or at your hotel’s first aid station.
The public hospitals offer good services and are free. The private hospitals, however, are expensive; it is essential you carry all necessary medical insurance documents.
Mauritius is a safe country; however, pick-pocketing is common in crowded places like the Central Market in Port Louis, Pereybere and Grand Baie. Also avoid dark alleys at night.
