Mahébourg is the perfect example of a typical Mauritius village. Though there are no beaches here, the city boasts of a beautiful waterfront, ideal for those idyllic long evening strolls.
The premier attraction of the city and the south-east coast of Mauritius is the National History Museum of Mahébourg. The various exhibits of the museum depict the history of the island. There are separate exhibits for the Dutch, French and British periods. Also, worth noticing is the beautiful Creole building of the museum.
Other sites of interest in the city include the Notre Dame des Anges (a colonial church), the maritime monument (marks the naval battle between the English and French) and the nearby British Coastal Fort (lying on the outskirts of the city).
Be sure to visit the Monday Market of the city. It is famous for its collection of local arts and crafts and all sorts of spices and delicacies.
