Chefchaouen: Attractions and more...
The main point of interest is the Old Town and its picturesque main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. This is a great place for a view of the surrounding mountains, the Grand Mosque and the 500-year-old Fortress also known as the Kasbah. The streets of the fortress are lined with stalls selling unique Moroccan handicrafts amongst other things; henna artists making tattoos for visitors are also seen here.
There are several walking and hiking trails in the surrounding mountains. One such location is called God’s Bridge—a rocky arch with great views of the valley below. The picturesque route from Chefchaouen to the village of Akchour is also a popular but challenging trail for hikers. The forest of Talessemtane which houses a national park can also be accessed from the town.
Chafchaouen’s surroundings are the largest producers of hashish in Morocco. It is not rare to be offered some by locals but smoking it is illegal.
