Dakhla is not a popular tourist destination mainly because years of unrest have made it an impossible place to visit. The presence of military does create a tense atmosphere. The town does not have many structures of historical importance to boast of but is located on a beautiful bay surrounded by lovely beaches.
The fortress and a catholic church built by the Spanish are the most popular buildings amongst visitors. Just outside town, on an isolated cape, stands an old Spanish lighthouse, and a climb to the top gives great views of the coast, the ocean and the town of Dakhla.
The shores are great for a walk along the sea but not hospitable for swimming because of the rocky cliffs and strong currents. A walk through the city centre will take you through meandering streets flanked by lovely blue and white structures. The bazaars in the evening make for an interesting visit.
