Founded by the Berbers in the Xth century, Taza guarded the route leading from
the fertile lands of the West to the steppes of the North and was, in its day,
a rich and awe-inspiring citadel. In the old town, which stands above the modern
one, there is a profusion of monuments, ancient marvels and curiosities: the
XIlth century ramparts, the bastion of the old Kasbah, the cereal market, the
souks where you can buy mats, jewellery and carpets made by the Beni Ouara"in
Berbers in the mountains, the amazing funnel-shaped minaret of the Market mosque
and Dar el Makhzen, the Great Mosque, in which hangs one of the most beautiful
bronze chandeliers in Morocco bearing 514 oil lamps...
After exploring the charms of history, there is also natural beauty to enjoy
- and the Taza region is magnificent. Forests of cork-oaks and cedars, tall
ferns, springs, waterfalls and lakes, all preserved and protected in the enchanting
Djebel Tazzeka national park. A climb to its summit (1980 metres) is well rewarded
by a stunning vicw ovcr the wooded mountains of Tazzeka and the snow-bound peaks
of the Middle Atlas.
