The Place Mechouar the sprawling main square is characterised by the four towers flanking it and the Palais de Justice. The New Friday Mosque with its pristine white tower stands out amidst the older reddish brown structures. The Spanish impact can be seen on the buildings in the old part of the city; the unique domed structure of the Spanish Cathedral with its well maintained lawns is the best example.
Walk down the Suuq Djemal for a bit of the Moroccan culture and the local flavour; a vibrant, colourful street, it is lined with stalls selling local foods and other products.
The Flamingo Lake which consists of many lakes amidst sand dunes is a birdwatcher’s paradise and is especially known for the sightings of the white flamingo. Laayoune has a bird park, Coline des Oiseaux, but it is closed to the public now; some of the exotic species within can be seen from the gate.
