The Medina of Marrakesh was founded by the Almoravids in 1070-72 and has been a cultural, economic and political centre of the city for a long time.
There are several attractive monuments from ages past such as the Kasbah, the gardens, the monumental doors, battlement, the Koutoubiya mosque and more.
There have been new additions to the place such as the Saadian Tombs, the Bandia Palace, the Palace Jamaa El Fna which is an open air theatre, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and more.
The minaret of the Katoubia mosque is sight worth visiting, and Ben Youssef Madrasa is a religious place which is also open for non Muslims.
The Coranic script inscribed in the mosque is a must-see. Government guides are available for taking you around the place and there are snake charmers and acrobats performing on the streets.
The atmosphere is cosy and the roads are a little difficult to follow but shopping can be a delight for those who can bargain.
