It is home to the magnificent Kasbahs established by the Glaoui , a powerful Moroccan Lord, during the colonial period.
Visit Tizi N'Tichka , meaning ‘Pass of the Pastures', home to the once powerful Berber Glaoua tribe; it is famous for its 1000 Kasbahs (fortified mud brick villages). Also visit the Heritage Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou when here.
The Kelâa of M'Gouna , the valley's Rose gardens, is near the Kasbah of El Glaoui; the best time to visit is in late May.
You'll find a traditional souk (market) on El Kelaa's main street; this is a typical African market with plenty of music and craft.
In March-April, the seven day long Sand Marathon takes place close to Ouarzazate.
This is the film capital of Morocco with films like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator being shot here. The Studio is on the outskirts of the city and is open to public tours.
