Inhambane is a pretty town in Mozambique with untouched beaches and clear blue water, literally undiscovered by tourists. It is a commercial seaport on Inhambane Bay, connected to the towns of Vilanculous and Beira by a traditional boat service called ‘dhow’.
Owing to its proximity to the Tropic of Capricorn, the weather is extremely humid, with daytime temperatures exceeding 25°C inland; however, the coastal areas remain slightly cooler because of the sea breeze. The city also lies in a cyclone-prone belt.
The inhabitants of Inhambane city number around 50,000. The main industrial activity consists of cashew nut processing, with tourism being one of the major revenue activities. The city is one of the oldest settlements in southern Africa, and has a rich European tradition from the time the Portuguese set up a post here.
