Namibia : Events and Entertainment

Maherero Day is an important event for the Herero people who gather in traditional attire at Okahandja to commemorate the chiefs killed in the Khoi-Khoi and German wars. In October, there’s a similar event for the Hereros in Omaruru, to honour their chief Zeraua.

Independence Day is celebrated on 21 March with full gusto all over the country. The week-long Windhoek Karnival is a social event for city socialites, as is the Küste Karnival at Swakopmund and the Windhoek Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Show. Oktoberfest, a remnant of its German past, is celebrated throughout the country towards the end of the month, with beer and traditional German sausages being devoured by the people.

The Bank Windhoek Arts Festival is the biggest arts festival in the country and is held at a variety of venues in Windhoek.
