The AIDS epidemic is a huge problem in Namibia, having one of the highest infection rates in Africa. Malaria is rife in the north-western region of the country. It is transmitted through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito carrying the pathogen. The characteristic symptoms of malaria are fever, headache, shivering fits, sweating, aching limbs and dizziness. Travellers can avoid mosquito bites by using repellents, wearing light-coloured clothes that cover the hands and legs and sleeping under a mosquito net.
