The massive Kalahari Desert, or Kgalagadi as it is known locally, covers the entire eastern and southern expanses of the African nation of Namibia. It stretches from the Orange River and extends into seven other Southern African countries.
The region is not a ‘true’ desert owing to its high rainfall, with some areas of the Kalahari experiencing around 250 mm of rainfall. Summer temperatures range from 20°C–40°C, while the cold, dry winter temperatures drop below 0°C.
Kalahari is called a ‘Green Desert’ because of its abundant vegetation. Animals like the antelope and giraffe also manage to survive the harsh weather conditions of the region.
The population of the desert consists mostly of the indigenous tribe called Bushmen (said to be the original human inhabitants of South Africa).
