Luderitz is a harbour town in southern Namibia. Discovered in 1488, it lies on one of the least hospitable coasts in Africa, and is home to an estimated 12, 900 inhabitants.
The town experiences a maritime climate. Gale winds frequently blow, especially during September-February and fog cover is a common occurrence.
In 1883, Luderitz became a German settlement when a German Merchant, Adolf Luederitz, purchased the bay from the local Nama chief.
Luderitz began as a trading post, but its fortunes changed in 1909 with the discovery of diamonds in the region. Today the economy is based on the fishing, crayfish industry and tourism.
