Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, lies at an altitude of 1650 metres in a
pretty valley bordered by the Eros Mountains in the north and the Auas mountains
in the south.
It is situated in almost the exact centre of Namibia.
Windhoek is the country's largest city and its administrative, communication,
and economic centre. It is also one of the world's major trade centres for Karakul
sheep skins.
At the end oh 19th century, Windhoek was the capital of the German colony of
South West Africa. And the influence of the German language and culture is,
after all this years, still alive: there are many German restaurants with traditional
German dishes, beer, and even a German carnival. Moreover, Windhoek combines
the modern city architectural style with that of the German colonial era.
Windhoek has an international airport 45 kilometres out of town.
