Tourist Guide Agadez

Agadez, in northern Niger, is the largest city in the country. It is home to an estimated 78,289 inhabitants.

Lying in the Sahara, Agadez receives less than 12 inches of annual rainfall. Summers are hot with temperatures in the range of 31-41C. The winters are cooler at 11-20C, with temperatures dipping further at night.

Founded in the 14th century, the city was an important stop on the trans-Saharan trade route. Today, it is a flourishing market town and a centre for transportation of uranium mined in the surrounding area.
Once the seat of the Tuareg sultanate, Agadez played a sign

ificant role in the Tuareg Rebellion of the 1990s. Even today the town remains the centre for Tuareg pastoralists. The local population is mainly of Fulani, Hausa and nomadic Tuareg origin.
