Gisenyi is a pleasant resort town in western Rwanda. Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, Gisenyi’s popularity as a friendly tourist holiday resort has grown due to its proximity to the lake.
Gisenyi’s weather is typical of the Rwandan tropical climate, with average daytime temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, depending on the altitude of the area. The dry season is from July to September, and the rainy months include the periods from February to May and October to December.
The population of Gisenyi is around 80,000 people. Visitors can head to Gisenyi’s two neighbouring resort towns of Kibuye and Cyangugu, which are accessible by a meandering road passing through the rainforests and domestic fields. A quaint chartered boat service connects the three towns making up for the lack of railways in this part of Rwanda.
