Tourist Guide Ile de goree
Just two miles off the coast of Senegal’s capital Dakar, Ile de Goree (the Goree Island) is world famous as a result of its history as an important Dutch slave trade centre which sent Black slaves to the Americas in the seventeenth century.
The climate on the island is moderate for sight-seeing, with temperatures averaging about 25°C in the daytime. The island is revered as more of a pilgrimage site or a holy shrine than a tourist place, because of its grievous yet historical significance. It was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
With a population of just over a 1000 residents, it is hardly 15 to 20 minutes from Dakar, and there are at least 10 ferry departures to the island in a single day. From the ferry, the sight of the rows of pink buildings and green gardens amid a sea of blue delights many tourists.
