Ile de Goree is a welcome change from the bustling, noisy streets of Dakar. Although it is now a peaceful island, a majority of the world’s tourists visit Goree because of its mesmerizing history. The Maison Des Esclaves (or House of Slaves) draws many African-Americans on a sort of pilgrimage as they reflect on their ancestors’ past, while tourists are observed to be deeply moved as the horrors of the slave trade are described to them.
The IFAN Historical Museum in the north of the island treats you to a descriptive history of Senegal, while lady tourists will be interested in visiting the Musee de la Femme, which portrays the role of Senegalese women throughout the history of the land.
The only way to explore the island is by foot; there are no cars. Tourists can stay at quaint little guesthouses which can be booked from Dakar. Some of the prominent visitors who have been to this island include US presidents, Nelson Mandela and even Pope John Paul II.
