Rand Airport is situated very close to Johannesburg city center.
It was built in the 1920s as the main airport for the city, but the city eventually outgrew it and a larger alternative airport, Jan Smuts International Airport, was built in 1960s. Presently, the airport serves as a landing base for big regional jets, including corporate jet aircrafts.
The airport employs modern techniques like VOR cloud-break, which allows landing of aircrafts even in bad weathers.
The LCN (Load-Classification-Number) enables landing of most aircrafts which are equivalent to the weight of an Airbus.
Two Boeing 747s were donated by the South African Airways to the South African Airways Museum Society, which are displayed at the airport site.
The airport offers facilities like a restaurant, a bar and music on weekends. Services like fire, medical and rescue are also available.
