Tourist Guide Pietermaritzburg
Pietermaritzburg is the capital of the Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. This is also the second largest city of this region.
The city was founded in the year 1838 and is popularly known as Maritzburg and abbreviated as PMB. The city was founded by the Voortrekkers with the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River and was also the capital of the short lived Boer Republic in Natalia. Regarding the name of the city there were two interpretations one is that it was named after Piet Retief and Gert Martiz the famous Voortekker leaders. The other one is that it was named after Piet Retief as his full name was Pieter Mounties Retief.
The place is rich in cultural heritage and has some of the cultural centers that reflect the city is into cultural activities.
The climate of this place is quit moderate and can be visited at any time of the year.
The population of this place comes to 521,805 according to 2001 census.
