The history of South Africa is wrought with apartheid, and Robben Island had a very important role to play in this. It served as the apartheid prison for many a years. In fact, it the prison walls have managed to produce some of the greatest leaders in Africa, like Autshomato and Nelson Mandela.
The isolated island served not only as a prison but also as the hospital for quarantined leprosy patients or those suffering from chronic mental disease. All of this can be learnt and experienced by visiting the Robben Island Museum.
The island boasts of some exquisite flowers and natural surroundings. With the Table Mountain providing the perfect backdrop, Robben Island has more than 132 bird species. Animal lovers will find this place an absolute paradise. Even the boat trip from Cape Town, leading up to the island, allows the visitors to feast their eyes on some marine animals such as seals and whales. The island houses more than 23 species of mammals.
