Reviews Pyramids of Meroe
Pyramids of Meroe
The Pyramids of Meroe are located 200 km north-east of Khartoum, Sudan.
The Pyramids of Meroe were built by the Nubians between 300 BC and 300 AD and were used to bury almost 40 kings and queens of Kush from the Meroitic kingdom.
The pyramids, built with horizontally-placed stones and around 6 to 30 m in height, were built over chambers containing the bodies of the royal persons. Some of the bodies were found with large amounts of precious jewellery on them. The walls of the pyramids have inscriptions in the Meroitic language, the names of kings and queens and some chapters from the ‘Book of the Dead’. Remnants of earthen vessels, bows and arrows, pottery and coloured glass have also been found in some pyramids.
Although not as publicized as their Egyptian counterparts, the Pyramids of Meroe are impressive and definitely worth a visit.Web Site: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/africa/sudan?poi=93723
Pyramid of Merwe
These pyramids are much smaller in size than the pyramids in Egypt, but one can see they have their own very distinctive style.
You may notice the tops of the pyramids are missing. Back in the early 1800’s an Italian Explorer was in the area and decided he would steal whatever treasures might be inside of the pyramids, he did so by removing the tops of the pyramids.
