The Zanzibar Cultural Festival, held on the island, is one of its main annual events. Steeped in local flavour, it provides a great opportunity to experience the customs and traditions of the country. The Mwaka Kogwa Festival signifies the beginning of a new growing season.
Religious festivals are also celebrated with devotion. The Muslim dominated areas come alive during the many festivals of Eid, while the Christian dominated areas keenly await the arrival of Christmas and Easter.
The Festival of the Dhow Countries, held in Zanzibar, attracts countries of the dhow—a single-mast boat found in the Arabian Sea along the Asian and African coastline. The event comprises of 10 days of music, movies and cultural events. The Kilimanjaro Marathon is a popular event among the tourists as well as the locals.
