Begin at the old town; built on a triangular peninsula on the western coast, it is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, homes, bazaars and mosques.
The Malindi Mosque is one of the oldest mosques here. It is especially known for its unusual conical shape.
The Roman Catholic Cathedral, built in 1897-1900, is a prototype of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in France.
Other popular sights include the Old Dispensary, now known as the Stone Town Cultural Centre, Livingstone's House, and the House of Wonders, a traditional crafts market.
The two main museums are the Peace Memorial Museum which displays Zanzibar’s history, and the Palace Museum, displaying the history of Zanzibar’s Sultans.
For a taste of local cuisine head to the Forodhani Gardens or to the Dhow Restaurant, where you can enjoy a meal on a wooden dhow (boat) in the Stone Town bay.
