Tozeur: Attractions and more...
Tozeur is famous for its yellow/brownish brick architecture, with simple geometric designs on the façades. The old town of Ouled El Hwadef is an exquisite example of this local brick work.
The 14th century medina offers a small treasure house of ancient coins, doors, bridal apparel and antique weapons. The Dar Chariet Museum, built like a Tunisian palace, displays, in true life settings, rare manuscripts, jewelry, ceramics and ornaments as wells as wax figures.
The Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions is a holy man’s mansion. Along with a glimpse of his living quarters, old documents and manuscripts are also on display.
Also worth a visit is the Great Mosque from 1030, the zawiyya (shrine) of Sidi Ali Abu Lifah, built in 1282 and the old botanical gardens.
Visit the village of Bled el Haddar. The main attraction here is the old mosque, with its minaret built on Roman foundations, the remains of the Roman town of Tusuros.
From Tozeur take a camel safari and explore the Sahara Desert, the large seasonal lake of Chott el-Djerid and smaller settlements around the region.
Tozeur hosts the International Festival of Oases from November-December every year.
