Tunis, the capital city, is a great place to start. It is a mix of the traditional with the modern. Walk along the twisting alleys of the famous old medina, and then stroll across the modern city boulevard.
For a glimpse at Tunisia’s rich past make your way to the ancient cities like Carthage, Dougga, El Jem, Le Kef and Sbeitla. Tunisia also has a string of stunning coastal towns that attract tourists every year. Make your way to the towns of Hammamet, Sidi Bou Said, Sousse and Gammarth, among others. Most coastal towns are great for diving, fishing and snorkelling, as well as other water sports.
If you are interested in a little desert adventure, head to the towns bordering the great Sahara. Also make a stop at the Troglodyte village of Matmata, made famous in the Star War films.
An interesting stop is the oasis town of Douz. Douz is the gateway to the Sahara and has a unique charm. Apart from desert safaris, the Thursday Camel Market of Douz is a must see.
