Chenini is located in the south-eastern part of Tunisia. It is an old village which used to be inhabited a nomadic tribe, but now lies in ruins. A modern village by the same name has come up a couple of kilometres away and has a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants.
Chenini experiences a typical desert climate. Summers are hot, dry and long and winters are very chilly. The little rain that there is, is restricted to the winter months.
Like most Berber villages, Chenini is built in the ridges between two hilltops. This was done so that the steep hills would act as natural fortresses to the village, protecting them from the invading tribes.
Chenini is referred to as the ‘village of the Star Wars’ as the region has featured several times in the Star Wars series.
