Douz, in central Tunisia, is a palm oasis surrounded by the desert. It lies on the northern fringes of the Sahara and is more popularly known as the ‘Gateway to the Sahara’. With a population of not more than 30,000 inhabitants, Douz is a centre of culture and commerce.
It has an ideal Mediterranean climate mild to warm, sunny winters and dry hot summers and does not get much rain; at times, the winter temperature may drop quite low. Summer is the ideal time to visit.
Historically, Douz was a significant stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Today, it is a bustling tourist destination opening its doors to the Great Erg (sand sea).
The inhabitants of Douz are mainly the Mrazig amel-raising nomads descending from the Banu Saleim tribe. The main occupations in Douz are animal herding and date harvesting.
