El-Jem is a town in Tunisia. It is home to approximately 18,302 inhabitants.
A prosperous Roman settlement in the 2nd century, today it is known for its large Roman Amphitheatre that dominates the cityscape. The theatre has been declared as a world heritage site and attracts a large number of tourists to the town.
From Roman times, the region of El Jem has gained its prosperity from its vast groves of olive trees.
Today too the region is famous for its olive grooves and olive oil.
The local population is mainly of Berber origin.
