Gafsa: Vacations and Tourism

Gafsa is a town in south-western Tunisia. Situated near the Chott el Jerid, it lies on an upland oasis and is home to nearly 90,000 inhabitants. The climate of Gafsa is characterised by warm days and cool nights, with temperatures dipping below 10C in winter. Much of Gafsa suffered severe destruction during the Second World War, as a result of which, very little remains of the Roman period. Today the town is the principal commercial and communications centre of the region. Most trade revolves around agriculture, handicrafts, the phosphate industry and tourism. The local population is mainly of Gafsa Bedouin origin.
