Ghomrassen: Attractions and more...
The city is considerably different from the nearby Tataouine, which is regarded as being more modern and comfortable. With the remains of ancient battlements and stone castles that are a haven for any archaeologist, the city manages to find a touristy element to attract visitors.
The most famous attraction of Ghomrassen is the Ksar Hadada, where parts of a Star Wars movie were filmed in 1999. The Ksar was turned into a tourist hotel but was later closed down; it is yet to open to travellers. At present, there are no hotels in Ghomrassen; the closest hotels are in the city of Tataouine.
The city has a popular souq (market) on Fridays, when the locals trade various goods like olive oil, which the region is known for. A few kilometres from Ghomrassen is another Ksar called Ferich that houses a quaint little cafe and carpet shop.
