The Great Mosque built in the fifteenth century is a beautiful structure with influences of Moorish and Turkish styles of architecture. This Great Mosque with its old rectangular minaret was renovated in 1972.
The Mosque of Sidi Abdul Qader al Gailani built in 1798 is also situated near the Great Mosque. The importance of Tunis was not as apparent until the Arabs arrived in the city in the seventh century.
This was the period that the Great Mosque was built and from then the city became the capital of Tunisia and became a major centre of religion, culture and science in the northern region of Africa.
The walls of the medina protect the Great Mosque and at night the medina is a beautiful sight to behold as it is lit up by colourful lights. The lively town of medina is a place which one can explore on foot from here.
This town has traditional shops selling Tunisian handicraft, the Bardo museum which has the largest collections of Roman mosaics and several cafes and restaurants.
