Tourist Guide Ksar Ghilane
Ksar Ghilane is an oasis located in the central part of Tunisia. It experiences a typical desert climate. Almost six months in the year it is extremely hot. The winter months are very chilly especially at night.
The region served as a military outpost for rulers of Tunisia to watch out over the Grand Erg Oriental the second largest continuous stretch of sand in the Sahara. The Romans even built some fortifications here.
Ksar is the site of the ancient ruins, lying at a short distance from the oasis. In the ancient times, this remote oasis was a stopover for travellers crossing the desert. Nowadays, visitors attracted by its authenticity, specially traverse the desert to get here.
The drive through the desert from Douz to Ksar Ghilane is scenic but difficult. Another option is to take the easier but less scenic route from Tamazret or Matmata.
