Tourist Guide Makthar
Makthar is a town in northern Tunisia. The town stands on a hill at a height of 1000m above sea level. With a population of 6 000 inhabitants, the city has the finest Roman ruins in Tunisia.
Built by the Numidians, Makthar has served as a military post through the ages. It suffered severe damages in the 10th century when it was attacked by the Banu Hillal tribe.
Makthar is an important market centre in the region. The local economy is based on agriculture, especially corn and olives, and on tourism.
