The main attraction in the city is the spectacular Triumphal arch, which was set up to greet visitors climbing the hills to the city. The other arch in the city is the Trajan Arc. It dates back to 116 BC. There is also a forum surrounding the arc.
Much of the Amphitheater at Makthar lies in ruins. However restoration work has been undertaken which makes it worth visiting.
Explore the Eastern Baths, among the finest in the country. Its strong pillars and high walls are still intact as are several of the geometric mosaic floorings.
The walled roads of Makthar are a fascinating site. Built by the Romans, they still stand today in excellent condition. The road starts at the Amphitheater and leads to the Forum.
The Schola Juvenum, a place of social gathering, was built in 88 BC. The site consists of columned structures, a quadrangle and a building with windows.
The Museum of Makthar displays a collection of artifacts from the Numidian, Punic and Roman times. Don’t miss the gravestones dedicated to the Numidian God Baal Hammom or the intricate Roman mosaics.
