Matmata is a small village in southern Tunisia. It is famous for its Troglodyte architecture, distinctive underground dwellings, which are used even today by some of the 5, 000 inhabitants of the village.
The village is 40 km away from the sea, and hence Matmata enjoys pure, dry air. A semi arid desert region, both the summers and winters are harsh here.
In the olden days villagers would migrate northward during the olive season in search of work. Today, Matmata is a well-known tourist attraction, and most of the inhabitants live on tourism and handicraft exhibitions in their homes.
The population of Matmata is Berber, and it is believed that Matmata has been populated for about 700 years.
