Medenine: Attractions and more...
The Ksar or old town is the main attraction of Medenine. At one time, it consisted of 8000 ghurfas—permanent homes of nomadic families. These served as meeting points for the families and large quantities of grains were also stored here. While a large number of these have been destroyed, several still stand.
The section of the ghurfas which is more popular with the tourists is lively and colourful with carpet shops housed within the old constructions. The more authentic section, on the other hand, serves as living quarters and provides a true picture of life in those times.
Gabes, which is known for its traditional Arabic markets and stretches of beaches, is not too far away from Medenine. Another popular destination in the vicinity is the resort island of Djerba, popular for its beaches and picturesque landscapes; it is also renowned as the shooting site of the first Star Wars movie.Related Contents
