Metlaoui’s claim to fame is the Lézard Rouge, which literally translated means Red Lizard. It is a tourist train which plies on an old track used by mining trains. The track is along a river through the Selja valley and is surrounded by rocky desert mountains. At the end of the track, the train is turned back to return to Metlaoui—a 40 minute journey. The route is considered to be along one of the most unique sceneries in the world. The train halts at all the vantage viewpoints along the way. The train too is an experience in its own with its luxurious interiors and waiters dressed in period-style costumes.
The oasis town of Tozeur is very close to Metlaoui. It is a quaint town with much of its old quarters well preserved. The village of Bled-el Haddar in its vicinity, old mosques and a zoo are some of the attractions.
