Sbeitla: Attractions and more...
The main attraction of Sbeitla is the Roman ruins in the original city which was known as Sufetula; the Byzantine rulers have added to these constructions. The highlight of the site is the forum made of three large temples which have survived the times well. Another interesting feature are the baths with beautiful mosaic floors; there was also a system of cold baths and hot baths, made possible by underground heating mechanisms.
Many of the original settlers were Christians, which led to the construction of several churches. The most striking amongst them is the Basilica of Saint Vitalis with its mosaic floors. The olive press is also still in good condition.
The horse-shoe shaped amphitheatre across from a large podium flanked by columns and the market area, key features of all Roman cities, are also seen here. The House of Seasons dotted with several carved columns and the large water reservoir is worth a visit.Related Contents
