Tamerza is situated in the western region of Tunisia, close to the border of Algiers. It is the largest mountain oasis of the country but has a very scanty population.
The region experiences extreme seasonal variations in temperature as is typical in the desert regions. During summer, the average temperature is 40°C, while in winter it falls below 10°C. The little rainfall it has is restricted to the winter months.
Tamerza developed on the slopes of the canyon aided by the water brought down from the mountains by the springs. In 1969, there was 22 days of continuous torrential rainfall. Most of the mud structures of the villages were destroyed. People fled and relocated a few kilometres away.
