Tataouine is known for its large market. The city comes alive on Mondays and Thursdays as hundreds of people pour into the market. Every year in March-April the city hosts the Ksar Festival. Berber tribesmen from all over southern Tunisia come take part in the five-day festivities, which include music and dance, enactments of Berber weddings, camel races, etc.
Tataouine is known in Tunisia mainly for its former army prison. The French established the Bataillon disciplinaire de la Légion Etrangère in Tataouine during the colonial era. Today this fortress type building stands alone on a hill, and is used by the Tunisian army.
Tataouine is an ideal base for exploring southern Tunisian towns and villages and the bordering Sahara Desert. Begin with the Berber villages of Chenini, Douiret and Ghomrassen. Explore the Ksar Haddada, which is home to the ghorfa dwellings featured in the Star Wars movie and the Ksar Ghilane—a desert oasis where you can camp in traditional Bedouin style.
