While the weather is pleasant most of the year, summer months can be extreme with temperatures reaching 45C.
The best time to visit is in the fall or winter.
In ancient times, this oasis town was an important Roman outpost and a stopping point for caravans on the sub-Sahara trade route.
Today it is famous for its palm dates-the deglet en nour, and its tourism industry.
