The mosque Aghlabid built in 688 was destroyed a number of times before being renovated to resemble the original structure.
The mosque was later enlarged by the rulers of the Aghlabid dynasty in 836 and 863. This great mosque has rectangular sides of 406, 410, 242, and 229 feet. The structure has a soaring minaret, a courtyard and a prayer hall.
The base and columns of the prayer hall are very old and have been taken from Byzantine and Roman structures. The mosque tilts slightly about eight meters to the right as can be observed from the courtyard.
The marble paved courtyard has 3 porticoes whose roofs are supported by arches. The beautiful minaret is 3 stories tall and hundred and three feet in height.
The interiors of the mosque have some wonderful Islamic ornamentation and the flora is inherited from the Hellenistic culture.
