The Medina in Tunis has been included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1979 and contains seven hundred monuments including mosques, palaces, madrasas, fountains and mausoleums from the Hafsid and Almohad dynasties.
The ancient buildings here include the Great Mosque which comprises of the library and the Muslim University, the Dar-al-Bey or Bey’s Palace and the Aghlabid Ez-Zitouna mosque.
There are a number of antique and jewellery shops here. The city of Medina has a wealth of ancient and traditional places and centres of learning where the wealthy residents and ministers lived.
Dar Ben Abdallah is a museum in the heart of the city of Medina which presents the traditional arts and customs of the place including the lifestyle of the upper class people of Tunisia.
The walls which enclosed the Medina have disappeared but this ancient city which is the largest in Tunisia is otherwise untouched.
