Zarzis is a Mediterranean oasis in south-eastern Tunisia. Developed by the French in the late nineteenth century, it is an important tourism centre and a major strategic port.
Owing to the mainly sunny and dry climate, Zarzis is a popular destination for tourists, with average temperatures during the day ranging from 22°C–27°C. In summer, the temperature can rise as high as 40°C. Typical of Mediterranean vegetation, the oasis has around 700,000 trees in olive plantations and more than 100,000 date-palm trees in groves.
