Livingstone, named after legendary explorer David Livingstone, is the capital of Zambia’s Southern Province. It is situated just north of the Zambezi River and owes its existence to the Victoria Falls which are just 10 km from the town.
Tourists prefer to visit Livingstone between January and July, when the Falls are seen at their best. Average temperatures range from 30ºC in summer to around 23ºC in winter. Livingstone is hottest between October and December, and the rains arrive only by November each year.
The town’s population is estimated to be around 97,000. Because of its proximity to the falls, tourism is the largest source of employment and revenue, although there is industrial development in the areas of textiles, vehicle assembly, furniture making and food processing.
