Mazar-e-sharif is an archaeological city in Afghanistan. With a population of over 300,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in the country and the capital of the Balkh Province. In the native language, Mazar-e-sharif means ‘Noble Shrine’.
The climate of Mazar-e-sharif ranges from semi-arid to arid. Summers are exceedingly hot while winters can be extremely cold. Winters also witness regular snowfall. Basically, regardless of the season, the temperatures are inclined towards the extremes.
Mazar-e-sharif was a small settlement in the early nineteenth century. In the recent times, the city has developed with a growing economy which is based on agriculture, cotton, karakul, carpets and gas.
